HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) — At a time when some in Pennsylvania are looking at online gambling as a potential source of revenue, two state lawmakers are proposing to crack down on it.

The state Senate recently authorized a study of the future of gaming, a study that includes an examination of online gaming.

Nonetheless, House Republicans Mario Scavello of Monroe County and Paul Clymer of Bucks County, respectively, believe lawmakers are willing to consider going in the opposite direction.

“I think the time is now,” said Scavello. “You cannot wait until the horse gets out of the barn. You need to address it now before it gets out of hand.”

Clymer said, “And is this the best that we can do as state legislators? Don’t we have any fresh ideas? Don’t we have other ways that we can provide good employment for the citizens of Pennsylvania?”

Scavello and Clymer cite the difficulties of preventing children and problem gamblers from playing online.

Currently internet gaming is illegal in Pennsylvania but carries no penalties. Scavello and Clymer want to establish fines and prison sentences for players.
